Bart Harvey came to Enterprise in 1984 to serve as a full-time volunteer, having taken a sabbatical from a successful career on Wall Street. Working closely with Enterprise co-founder Jim Rouse, Harvey refocused his skills and leadership ability on innovative ways to fund affordable housing development as well as expanding and improving Enterprise’s operations and impact. A year later, he took a senior executive position at Enterprise and went on to become Enterprise’s CEO. In March 2008, Harvey retired from Enterprise, having found successors in Doris Koo and Jeff Donahue, the CEOs of Enterprise Community Partners and Enterprise Community Investments, respectively. Enterprise is honoring Harvey’s leadership and commitment to public service by inaugurating the Bart Harvey Enterprise Fellowship.
That first year of work with Jim Rouse “changed the trajectory of my life,” Harvey recalls. “When my time was up, we had a talk. He said I could go back to being an investment banker for the rich, but would I consider being a banker for the poor? From Jim, I learned about doing work based on a set of values and seeing things the way they really are, and not just betting on what would be successful. I learned to look at the problems of poverty, to see what ought to be, and to try to bring that to fruition.” The Bart Harvey Enterprise Fellowship is designed to offer young professionals the opportunity to be exposed to the work of Enterprise with the objective of inspiring the kind of personal transformation that Harvey experienced.
The Bart Harvey Enterprise Fellow for 2008-2010 is expected to provide substantial and creative support to the CEOs, Chairs and other senior staff, as evidenced by his or her contribution to the progress and success of assigned projects as well as demonstration of technical, teamwork, leadership and communications skills. Assignments could include the analysis of program data and market trends to determine the impact of existing Enterprise programs, such as equity and debt investments, supportive housing or senior housing. The Fellow may also assist with researching and launching innovative new products, programs and policy initiatives.
The program will expose the Fellow to the implementation of the spirit and mission of Enterprise. The successful candidate will pursue special projects under the direction of Doris Koo. He or she will carry out assignments for the CEOs, chairs and senior management staff, thereby having frequent contact with Enterprise’s top leadership. The CEOs and senior staff will endeavor to identify activities for the Harvey Fellow that have important implications for Enterprise’s strategic and organizational challenges. Some of the Fellow’s portfolio will entail in-depth analysis and field research.
The criteria for selection will include excellent academic performance in a field relevant to Enterprise’s mission and program areas, a demonstrated commitment to public service, past examples of leadership, and a compelling interest in working for Enterprise. Candidates are expected to have a master’s degree in relevant fields such as planning, business and public administration. Current and former employees of Enterprise are not eligible to apply. The Fellow will be stationed in Enterprise’s Columbia, Md., offices and will travel frequently. The fellowship offers an annual salary of $50,000 plus benefits.
