San Antonio
Home » Local Work » San Antonio : Introduction

San Antonio enjoys a low unemployment rate and low cost of living, along with a homeownership rate that grew to 58 percent during the 1990s. But its Hispanic and African-American residents have significantly lower income and educational levels than the rest of the city’s residents. More than one-third of San Antonio’s families with children live in poverty, and 54 percent of low-income homeowners live in dilapidated housing—a higher percentage than any major city in the United States.

We are grateful to the many partners that support our work in San Antonio.

San Antonio

More than 50 percent of San Antonio’s low-income homeowners live in physically inadequate housing – a higher percentage than any major city in the United States. Enterprise San Antonio is addressing this issue as it helps develop decent, affordable homes for low- and moderate-income families, such as this one in Hunter’s Glen. Photo: Ron St. Angelo

Accomplishments
We invested close to $30 million in San Antonio over the past 10 years to:

  • Help develop 6,500 homes for low- and moderate income families.
  • Manage the San Antonio Community Development Partnership that provides $500,000 each year to eight community-based organizations that produce 1,900 affordable homes annually.
  • Empower 75 emerging leaders from San Antonio’s poorest neighborhoods through the Community Leadership Institute.
Success Story
Enterprise San Antonio launched the Community Leadership Institute (CLI) in 1999 to provide free leadership training classes and networking opportunities for people interested in building support and consensus for neighborhood change. Its goal is to enhance the skills of grassroots leaders to address the issues facing underserved neighborhoods. CLI reaches out to quiet heroes who give of their time to work for positive neighborhood change.

“The Community Leadership Institute provides community leaders with life-long support for their personal and professional goals. We share a common vision for our neighborhoods and are committed to making them places where all residents can thrive.”
Martha Alvarado, CLI graduate and founder of Edgewood Neighborhood Family Network
